Artist Introduction: Patrick Dalli

Patrick Dalli is renowned for his large-scale tactile nude paintings. His artistic journey started at a very young age, developing technical and formative training through informal self-taught processes.

In 1995, he started attending academic training, focusing mainly on the human form. It was during this phase that Dalli’s artistic work gravitated more towards the represantation of the human form and the nude. This interest Led Dalli to develop a studio practice based on observation and life sessions. Recently, Dalli embarked on another artistic path, exploring a new theme revolving around stylised landscapes.

Acrylic & Mixed Media On Foam Board

Artist Introduction: Feng Hongzhao

I came to live in Malta from China in July 2021 and I am working from my home studio now.

I started to study sketch when I was 13 years old and at the age of 18 I entered Xi’an Acedemy of Fine Arts in China to study sketch and oil painting and four years later I graduated and joined a university art school in China to teach oil painting and sketch. After 20 years I left this university and came to Malta.

I love the sea, I love old buildings and I love natural landscapes, and Malta has all three perfectly. Malta also has a good system of education. That’s why I came to Malta.

The buildings and the sea of Malta are perfect for watercolor painting, everything has a fascinating color under the strong light, so I chose to use watercolor as my main painting material. I am faithful to my eyes, I only paint what my eyes see and I hope I can become a true recorder. Now I live in Malta with my wife and two children and we all enjoy our life in Malta.

I often use these materials to make watercolor painting:

  • Arches 300GSM coldpress watercolor paper
  • Holbeil watercolor paints
  • Winsor and Newton watercolor artist level paints

Gerald John Micallef

From a very young age Gerald-John Micallef studied drawing and painting initially at Stella Maris College, and then under the supervision of Artist Anton Calleja. He is influenced by the leading portrait Artist Raymond Pitre who is also a family friend. Between 1990 and 1997, he read philosophy, psychology and sociology at the Faculty of Arts and later on theology at the Faculty of Theology, University of Malta. These academic studies influenced his works to a great extent.

Gerald has had the opportunity to meet various artists during his course of life who have helped him not only to develop his ideas further but also to express his thoughts in an artistically meaningful way. Worth mentioning are renowned Maltese artists Anton Calleja, Josef Calleja and Anton Agius.

Gerald’s work is an expression of all that goes on in his life. Some works evoke an amplified scream of a particular experience or encounter; others are the true expression of cherished moments, however painful, that help the artist to gain higher levels of maturity. The artist sees his work as a means of communication with the outside world. No inhibitions, no dramas, a simple exposition of an artistic soul in turmoil. Gerald’s talent extends also to music. He is an accomplished musician that finds a unique harmonious balance between audible art and visual art which help him understand profoundly all that there is. He has his works also included in the BOV modern and contemporary art collection and also abroad namely in Berlin and Australia.
